The Phoenix Players present award-winning play by Caryl Churchill
The Phoenix Players start their new season at the Kings Theatre in Gloucester with Escaped Alone by Caryl Churchill, the latest play by one of the most important and innovative British playwrights of recent decades. Premiered in 2016 at the Royal Court in London, the play transferred to the Brooklyn Academy in New York, to rave reviews.
Escaped Alone takes place in a garden on a sunny summer afternoons. Three women – all old friends – are joined by a neighbour who they hardly know. They sit and drink tea, gossip and chat about everything, from their grandchildren to drones and mobile phones, hairdos to science and flying, from the latest TV series to the new mini Tesco. But as the play goes on, we become aware of something more unsettling behind this cosy scene …
Escaped Alone combines the domestic and the epic, the global and the personal, cosiness and disaster. We see parallels with current affairs and with the fears and preoccupations which underpin our everyday lives in the modern world.
The play offers a rare opportunity for a cast of four mature and experienced actresses from the Phoenix Players to take the stage, and create wonderful characters that are funny, touching and fascinating. The play reveals a lot about these characters, about the modern world, and about ourselves.
The play won the Writers’ Guild Best Play award in 2017.
